Sketchnotes from Cultivating Creativity in Product Design Teams

Two designers present talks at two ends of the spectrum— designing for confrontation and designing for joy

Design for Confrontation, Design for Growth

Loved the evolution of this talk by Steve Selzer from last year’s focus on designing for friction to this year’s designing for confrontation. Looking forward to next year’s talk!

Lessons Learned

  • Reducing friction leads to fewer opportunities for meaningful growth that comes from the number of difficult conversations you’re willing to have
  • We’re stuck in an endless loop of swipes and likes
  • Products are pulling us apart, divisive
  • Confront your customers, your colleagues, yourself
  • Pick something in your life, confront it, share your story

Designing Joyful Experiences

Great talk by François Chartrand 🌞 on designing for joyful experiences that go beyond the superficial delight.

Lessons Learned

  • Differentiate between deep vs superficial delight
  • Not everything that matters can be measured and not everything that can be measured matters
  • Design appeal comes in three levels — visceral, behavioral, and reflective
  • Facebook’s Messenger is a great example of sound design
  • Mailchimp does an incredible job with writing copy

Big thanks to Julie Stanescu from Rethink for organizing the event! Looking forward to the next event on designing effective collaboration at scale.
